This year, one of the hot products grabbing people’s attention is the cooling towel. Once you have used one yourself, you’ll find it easy to understand why they’re in demand.
I have to say I’m a big fan of a quality cooling towel, especially after I recently spent some time in sweltering Ho Chi Minh City. A ten-minute walk through the busiest part of town would have felt like an hour without this accessory.
Haven’t come across cooling towels yet? If you look at their popularity in the Northern Hemisphere this June/July, it’s easy to predict that they will be everywhere in Australia by the time summer sets in.
So, what’s a cooling towel?
How can something that is supposed to dry you off keep you cool?? Well, cooling towels work by mimicking the natural cooling effect you get when sweat evaporates off your skin. They are made from high-tech synthetic materials; the most popular ones on the market either feel like the chamois cloths that were a big deal in the late 1990s (remember ShamWow) or a soft, light microfibre cloth.
The material used to create cooling towels traps water so the towel becomes cooler than ambient air when wet. This means the towel maintains a temperature that feels cool to your skin. The fibres retain water, which provides cooling relief, but the bonus is that your cooling towel feels relatively dry, so your clothes won’t get wet patches.
It’s a lifesaver on a hot day. Here’s how to use a cooling towel:
– First, soak your towel in water
– Next, wring it out as much as possible, and give it a few shakes to ‘activate’ it
– Then chuck it round your neck and head out the door. Say “Aaaah”… the cooling effect should last for a couple of hours.
Cooling towels are a great merch option because they tick the boxes for being easy to add a brand to, they’re lightweight, useful and reusable. All good things.
Cooling towels: Hot, or not?
When the weather is hot, so are cooling towels (figuratively speaking). The advantage of this product is that it serves a really clear purpose, and all the hippest kids have one. Serena Williams has her own brand of cooling towel, and in an Olympic year, we can expect to see a lot of them on the track and sports fields, giving the product extra cred.
If the crowds don’t convince you, take my word for it. I’m a huge fan of a cooling towel and I’ll be taking one with me whenever I’m travelling in summer from now on.
If you want to impress people with a branded cooling towel, make sure you work with your merch provider to choose a quality product. It has to feel good in someone’s hands and around their neck, or they won’t use it.
